Music

Intent:

Music plays an important part in helping children develop self- discipline skills and feel part of a community. The intention at Hepworth Junior and Infant School is to provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills, to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

Implementation:

At Hepworth School we make music an enjoyable, fun learning experience. We actively encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children.

Singing is a key component of our music teaching.  Throughout the week and in our weekly, whole school music lessons, we focus on developing the children’s singing and performance skills.

Music appreciation (Listening) is also a key component of our music teaching.  In our whole school music lessons, we focus on a variety of key pieces of music, encouraging children to listen carefully and enjoy the music, learning about different composers, instruments and styles of music.

Composition is carried out in a cross curricular manner, within other subjects such as literacy, history, geography, RE and science.  Children learn about and use the interrelated dimensions of music to compose music within a variety of different styles and forms, and with a range of different instruments, including body percussion and ICT. They have the opportunity to perform and evaluate their compositions.  They learn of different ways to record their compositions on paper.

Children learn to play the basic skills of the recorder in Years 3 and 4.  They also learn the basics of traditional music notation.  They are then actively encouraged to move onto learning instruments with the music service; Musica Kirklees.

Impact:

Children develop a love of music and regularly sing within different areas of the curriculum.  They learn about famous composers and performers and become knowledgeable about them.

They compose within cross-curricular subjects using a variety of instruments, including computers.  Composition with an ‘eco’ theme is given high priority.

They perform a variety of music including their own compositions.

Many pupils go on to have instrumental tuition with Musica Kirklees.
